Omitting our ocean emissions

19 October 2021

In line with our climate goals, we’ve joined the coZEV group (Cargo Owners for Zero Emissions Vessels) and plan to transition to zero-emission ocean shipping for all our products by 2040.

90% of consumer goods are now transported around the globe by sea in container ships. This includes Frog bikes. Most of our bike parts arrive into our Welsh factory from our suppliers by sea, and we ship finished bikes out to our more distant markets such as North America in container ships too.

These ships are almost entirely propelled by fossil fuels and are responsible for 1 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions each year: that’s as much as all of the US’s coal fired power plants combined! This really needs to change if the world is to eliminate CO2 emissions by 2050 and reduce the spiralling effects of climate change. It is a large and important sector and it requires immediate attention! That’s where the coZEV comes in!

What’s the coZEV?

This month a group of consumer brands who use sea freight for the shipment of goods have come together to show that we all intend to use exclusively zero carbon vessels by 2040. The group is called the Cargo Owners for Zero Emissions Vessels, or “coZEV” and includes the likes of Amazon, Unilever, IKEA, Frog, Patagonia, Tchibo and Michelin among others. To achieve zero emissions, we are calling on the shipping industry to invest in hydrogen-based fuels which will need policy changes from many governments as well as commitment from the industry. Recent developments in zero-carbon fuels have now made this a safe and viable option, but with the average lifespan of a ship being 25-35 years, we have to start commissioning only zero carbon vessels right now.

Frog’s intention is to show a clear signal to shipping companies and the investment community that we want decarbonisation in this sector, and to call on governments to make policy changes to support this transition. All of which will contribute to helping green up the delivery of our products to your doorsteps.

No single company can decarbonize this sector alone, which is why collaboration through coZEV can help us raise ambition and get this transition in motion!
