FAQs

Fitting & buying

To purchase a Frog bike, you have a few options depending on your location and preference. If you prefer shopping online, you can order through the official Frog Bikes website or other trusted online retailers. Alternatively, you can check with local Frog Bikes stockists. Make sure to check availability and sizing options to find the perfect fit for your needs.

Check our fitting guide to see what size of bike will best fit your child. Don’t be tempted to go for a larger bike, it’s not safe for a child to ride a bike that they can’t easily control, or where their legs don’t comfortably reach the ground. Frog bikes are designed to grow with your child so you should get at least 18 months’ use out of the bike: the saddle height can be raised or lowered (using the quick release available on most of the bikes), the handlebars can be adjusted, seat posts are long, and saddles can be moved backwards and forwards to match the growing reach of a child’s arms.

If your child fits more than one model, you should consider how confident they are at riding. If they are unsteady we would suggest selecting the smaller model first. If you are still unsure, you could pop to a local Frog Bikes stockist to try one out for size.

If a bike shop near you sells Frog bikes, we recommend you go and try it out for yourself (see our list of local Frog Bikes stockists). We also attend regular events within the UK where you can demo a selection of bikes for free. Keep an eye out for which events we will be attending on our socials. If not, use the Frog fitting guide to find the right size bike and you can order directly from this website.

If you change your mind, or need a different size, you have 28 days to return the bike. The bike must be unridden and returned in its original state and with the original packaging. The return cost will be £40.00 if you live in the UK. Please call us on +44 1784 557300 to find out the return cost if you live outside the UK.

If you've recently purchased a Frog bike we recommend visiting the new bike page which provides step-by-step instructions on how to set up your child's bike.

Please see the manual online for full details on how to adjust the saddle and handlebars. If you need further help adjusting your bike, your local bike store should be able to assist.

If you buy direct from the Frog Bikes website or a trusted Frog retailer online, you’ll need to attach the pedals and turn the handlebar. Visit the new bike page for instructions.

If you purchase the Frog bike from a local stockist instore, your bike should be fully assembled, at no extra charge.

Please be aware that properly fitting a road, track, or mountain bike to a child for optimal riding efficiency and control requires advanced knowledge. We strongly recommend having the bike fitted by a professional bike mechanic or a knowledgeable adult experienced in bike fitting and the specific biking discipline before your child rides it.

We do not offer helmets on our website. However, our local Frog Bikes stockists normally have a selection available.

To measure for a helmet, wrap a tape measure around the child's head just above the eyebrows and read the measurement in centimetres.

Most kids' helmets are sized either XS (around 46-53cm) or S (around 52-58cm). If your child's head is larger, then you should buy an adult helmet. The average person's head is fully grown at the age of 10, so you won't find your child needs a new helmet as often as they need a new bike.

Most helmets are adjustable, either with a twist at the back or by changing the thickness of the foam panels inside. The helmet should fit snugly and be comfortable to wear. When the child shakes or nods their head the helmet should remain secure. The helmet rim should sit on the forehead, just above the eyebrows. The helmet should NOT be tilted back leaving the forehead exposed or tipped so far forward that it covers their eyes.

We are very keen that old bikes don't fester in the corner of your garage, or even worse end up in a landfill.

Some of our Frog Bikes stockists offer a bike exchange, it is not something we currently offer ourselves, but something we hope to do in the future. Once your child has outgrown their bike please talk to your nearest Frog Bikes stockist about exchanging it for the next size bike. Alternatively, selling via online marketplaces is a great option to ensure that your child's old bike can be enjoyed by another child.

Very well, just take a look at eBay! Frog bikes tend to hold their value incredibly well, with an average resale price of 60% of the original RRP.

There is also a Facebook Marketplace group for Frog Bikes and some local Frog Bikes stockists offer a Frog part exchange scheme.

Some countries charge local import duty, taxes and admin fees for handling imports. These are the responsibility of the purchaser as Frog Bikes are unable to know all taxes charged by all local authorities.

The cost of buying our bikes directly from our website changes between countries, due to variations in shipping and taxation.

We would always advise that you buy your Frog bike from a Frog Bikes stockist within your own country: not only will the bike be built and checked for you by a qualified mechanic, you will also save on the shipping costs.

If you are interested in leasing a Frog bike, we recommend visiting the Bike Club's website. If you have an existing subscription with Bike Club and have a query regarding this, please contact them directly.

Advice for new riders

Balance bikes are ideal from the age of 18 months upwards. As long as the rider can get both feet flat on the ground, they will enjoy riding it. But if your child is older, they can of course learn to ride at any age, you can even remove the pedals (and cranks) from the bike and use it like a balance bike to help gain their confidence before trying pedals.

Just make sure you get them a lightweight bike that is not too big for them: a big bike is not as safe, and it may even put them off.

We recommend starting on a lightweight balance bike from a young age, (around 18 months) as balance is so important in riding. Kids will enjoy the freedom of a set of wheels and the transition to a “proper” bike with pedals will be relatively smooth. Balance bikes can handle much rougher terrain than stabiliser wheels and it teaches kids the necessary balancing skills that will be required for future pedalling.

If your child is too big for a balance bike, get them a lightweight bike which is the right height for them, and take off the pedals (and cranks arms if required) for a few weeks and use it like a balance bike. It won't take them long to get the hang of it, then add back the pedals and they'll be off!

There are advantages to both, but most cycling professionals would recommend the balance option. Balance is so important in learning to ride, and using stabilisers for a few months (or longer) only delays the process. When the stabilisers go, the child still has to learn to balance, and by that time they can be much bigger, which means a higher centre of gravity. Also, a balance bike can be taken on much rougher terrain than stabilisers – whether it’s a grassy park or the woods. If kids start their cycling life on a lightweight balance bike when it’s time to move on they only have to learn to pedal – this is much more straight-forward than learning to balance.

If your child is a bit too tall for a balance bike, you can buy the right size bike for them ( see our fitting guide) and simply leave the pedals detached for a while. They can learn to balance and scoot around on their bike, and when they feel ready, just add the pedals. If your child is still a little unsteady you can attach a balance buddy to the bike. This is a height-adjustable handle, designed for the parent to provide balance when teaching children to ride independently.

Should you decide that you need stabilisers, you can purchase them at Frog Bikes, these are only suitable for 12" to 18" wheel bikes. You will also need to purchase 2 of the 30mm bolts. Or, alternatively, you can contact your local Frog Bikes stockist, who can fit them, as this may require a change of axle.

Can you imagine riding a bike that’s half your own body weight?
That’s what lots of steel kids’ bikes are like.

But a lightweight bike is easier for children to handle especially starting and stopping and gives them better control over their movements, such as navigating obstacles or corners more effectively. Riding a lighter bike also requires less effort allowing children to enjoy cycling for longer periods without feeling overly tired. It’s also easier for parents to carry or load onto a roof-rack.

Frog Bikes are all aluminium, which makes them some of the lightest bikes on the market.

Depending on how fast your child grows, of course, we expect that most of our bikes will last a child for about 18 months to 2 years. The bikes are designed with “stretch” so the saddle height can be raised or lowered, seat posts are long, handlebars can be adjusted and also a longer handlebar stem riser can be added, and saddles can be moved backwards to match the growing reach of a child’s arms. Take a look at other ways you can adapt a Frog bike.

When your child is ready for the next size bike, some Frog Bikes stockists offer an exchange or trade-in scheme. If you purchased the original Frog bike from a Frog Bikes stockist we recommend taking the bike back to them to discuss a trade-in. We do not currently offer this scheme, but is something we hope to be able to provide in the future.

All Frog bikes exceed safety standards, and to go the extra mile some of our bikes are even tested to adult safety standards, which means some of our larger 24" and 26" bikes are suitable for smaller adults.

Maintainance & customisation

We recommend taking your bike to your local bike shop for a service after the first 6 weeks of riding, as cables and single-speed chains tend to stretch initially. Regular maintenance is essential: check for brake pad wear, keep the chain, gears, and gear-changer well-oiled, especially after washing the bike or riding in the rain. Clean off mud after each ride and avoid leaving the bike damp. Periodically inspect and retighten nuts, bolts, and fasteners as needed. Additionally, have a qualified bike mechanic at your local bike shop perform a full-service every 6-12 months. For more details on servicing, recommended intervals, and torque specifications, please refer to the owner's manual.

We recommend using the clear frame protection stickers you receive with your Frog bike to prevent any paint damage to the frame. If you would like to cover any marks on your Frog bike frame we offer paint plasters to keep your frame looking shiny and new. Alternatively, you can purchase touch-up paint from GPaint.

Please be aware that the colour of the touch-up paint and paint plasters may not be identical to the colour of your bike frame depending on the age of your bicycle. Frame paintwork may fade over time due to use and exposure to the elements, for this reason, we strongly recommend testing touch-up paint on a small, discreet area first.

"Depending on the model of your Frog bike and how old it is will depend on what version of mudguards you may have. Fitting them to the bike will be slightly different. Please note that the older fixed-length mudguards will not fit on the newer Frog hybrid and city bikes. The newer adjustable length mudguards will fit all models of the Frog hybrid and city bike regardless of age. First pedal bikes need to be fitted with strutless mudguards. Please see all mudguards available on the Frog website.

Please click here to view the fitting manuals for all mudguards..

Your local bike shop will sell you replacement standard inner tubes. Check the dimensions written on your tyres to see what size you need, or see the detailed Tech Spec for each bike model on our website.

This is stamped on the bottom of the frame right between the pedal cranks (on the “bottom bracket”).

Most of the bikes' front wheels have a quick-release mechanism so you can easily take them off and re-attach them. The balances bikes and the first pedal bikes do not have quick-release wheels, but can be easily removed - this is to adhere to safety standards.

Check the user manual for instructions on how to disconnect the front brakes and remove the wheel – and how to reconnect them safely.

You can attach a kickstand to the Frog bike, from size Frog 40 upwards. Please ensure you select the correct size and type of kickstand for your Frog bike. You can find them here or you can get them at many local Frog Bikes stockists too.

Yes, this is easy to do. Please watch this short video to show you how:

We always recommend that a qualified bike mechanic checks your bike thoroughly before your child starts to ride it.

The current international standard (ISO 8098 - Bicycles for Young Children) requires that pedal bikes with a maximum saddle height between 435mm and 635mm (up to 16” wheel size on Frog Bikes) come with a chain guard. Therefore, all of our first pedal bikes include a chain guard in the box.

Many other brands and models of first pedal bikes sold in the UK do not include a chain guard, and some parents prefer not to have it fitted. We recommend that stores ask customers whether they would like the chain guard installed.

First pedal bicycles purchased directly from Frog Bikes online will arrive fully assembled with the chain guard pre-fitted. The box will also include the parts needed to remove the chain guard if desired. If you wish to remove the chain guard, we suggest visiting a local Frog stockist or a bike mechanic, as specialised tools and advanced bike knowledge are required for this adjustment.

We provide paint plasters designed to conceal scratches on the bike's frame paintwork. Alternatively, you can acquire Frog-specific touch-up paint from GPaint.

All Frog first pedal, hybrid and city bikes are supplied with mudguards as standard (worth £28) to protect the bike and the children from dirt, mud, debris and water. Some stores do not fit them as standard but must supply you with the mudguards a part of your purchase. Visit the 'How do I attach mudguards' question to find out how to fit these yourself.

Compliance & regulation

"British Cycling stipulates gear restrictions for kids' track bikes, to reduce the risk of over-use injuries, avoid strength imbalances in young riders, and ensure all riders compete on an equal footing. We have taken a conservative view of the age of our riders, and for each of our track bike sizes our standard gear ratios give a shorter roll-out than BC standards allow.

If your child can comfortably handle larger gear ratios, your local bike store will be able to swap out the relevant parts.

BC Restrictions:
Under 14: 6.45m
Under 12: 6.05m
Under 10: 5.4m
Under 8: 5.1m

Frog roll-outs:
Frog Track 70: 5.25m
Frog Track 67: 4.60m
Frog Track 58: 3.98m

Every single Frog bike's frame, fork and component is rigorously tested and conforms to ISO and CPSC standards.

The Tadpole Mini, Tadpole and Tadpole Plus have passed EN71 (Toys) which is the standard for Balance bikes.

The Frog 40 and 44 have passed ISO 8098 and CPSC 1512 and are supplied with a full chainguard as standard, which stores can fit if requested when you collect the bike. US and Australian bikes include coaster wheels. The Frog 47 has passed ISO 4210 and is supplied with a full chainguard as standard, which stores can fit if requested when you collect the bike. US and Australian bikes include coaster wheels.

The Frog Hybrid 53, 61, 67, 73 and 78 have passed ISO 4210 and CPSC 1512.
The Frog City 53, 61 and 67 have passed ISO 4210 and CPSC 1512.
The Frog Road 58, 67 and 70 have passed ISO 4210 and CPSC 1512.The Frog MTBs 62, 69 and 72 have passed ISO 4210 and CPSC 1512.
The Frog Track 58, 67 and 70 have passed ISO 4210 and CPSC 1512 (with the exception of reflectors and brakes as these are not supplied with the bike due to it being for track use only and not for use on public roads)

If you would like more details about the nature of the testing, and how our bikes conform to the standards, please contact us on info@frogbikes.com. Further details are also available from BSI Standards Publications.
