Known for its picturesque landscapes Ireland offers incredible cycling routes that are perfect for families. From gentle meanders through lush forests and scenic valleys to thrilling mountain climbs and coastal roads, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

1.Blessington Greenway

The Blessington Greenway walk links the historic town of Blessington with the Palladian mansion at Russborough House. In the midst of nature's splendour, the Blessington Greenway is the ideal destination for kids to enjoy a scenic ride on their bikes. This idyllic trail promises a safe and scenic route that not only encourages physical activity but also provides an opportunity for young explorers to connect with the great outdoors.

2.Waterford Greenway, County Waterford

The Waterford Greenway, which opened in 2017, is a 46km off-road trail that is completely car-free, running from Waterford City to Dungarvan. Located along a disused railway line, it passes through charming villages and stunning countryside and is suitable for all ages and abilities. The journey takes cyclists across 3 viaducts, 11 bridges, a 400m tunnel and alongside the River Suir all the way to the Copper Coast. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for a picnic, visit medieval ruins, or explore Viking sites en route.

3.Great Western Greenway, County Mayo

The multi-award-winning Great Western Greenway is a 44km traffic-free trail that runs from Westport to Achill Island, passing through some of the most breathtaking scenery! The trail, which used to be a railway line, is mostly flat, making it perfect for families to cycle with young children. There are plenty of places to stop and take in the views! The trail passes through some great towns, including Newport and Mulranny, or if you take a detour, you can visit Keem Bay on Achill Island. You will find bogs, woodlands, wildlife, flora and active farmland on your adventures - something interesting for every visitor.

4.Killarney National Park, County Kerry

Killarney National Park is a very beautiful location in Ireland, with stunning lakes, mountains and forests en route. Killarney National Park has been designated as a Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. The park has a number of cycling routes that are suitable for families including the Muckross Lake Loop and the Dinis Cottage Loop. These routes take cyclists past some of the park’s most scenic spots, including Torc Waterfall, Muckross Abbey and Ross Castle. There are also plenty of places to stop for a picnic or even a spot of fishing.

5.The Aran Islands, County Galway

The Aran Islands are a group of three islands located off the coast of County Galway. With no cars allowed on the islands, cycling is the perfect way to explore. The islands are relatively flat, making them suitable for families with children, and there are plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat. Cyclists can also visit some of the island's most famous attractions, like Dún Aonghasa and the Wormhole, a natural swimming pool carved into the rock.

6.The Copper Coast, County Waterford

The Copper Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline located in County Waterford. The area is a UNESCO Global Geopark, with unique geological features and stunning sea views. The Copper Coast Cycle Route is a 25km route that takes cyclists past some of the most beautiful spots on the coast, including the picturesque village of Stradbally and the stunning Mahon Falls. This route is more suited to families with older children, as there are a few steep climbs along the way.
