Sustainable kids' bike solutions for outgrown bikes

Ah, that bittersweet moment. Your little one has mastered the open road on their trusty Frog bike, but their growth spurt means it's time for a bigger set of wheels. Don't worry, this doesn't have to be the end of the road for your Frog! At Frog Bikes, we're passionate about sustainability, which extends to our bikes' lifecycle.

Take a look at our Sustainability report >>

One of the standout features of Frog bikes is their adaptability. Many models come with adjustable components, such as seat posts and handlebars, allowing you to fine-tune the fit as your child grows. Plus, our range of bikes ensures a perfect fit for every stage of childhood, from balance bikes to hybrids and mountain bikes.

Frog bikes offer features that are specifically designed for children which makes them some of the best children’s bikes on the market, including:

  • Lightweight frames: Our lightweight kids’ bikes are made with high-quality aluminium (as of September 2024, some of our bikes are now even made from 25% recycled aluminium), which is both lightweight and strong, making it easier for kids to handle and ride and is robust enough to withstand many many years of use
  • Custom geometry: Our bike frame design is based on scientific research and specifically tailored to fit a child’s anatomy, providing a comfortable and efficient riding position that accommodates shorter arms, torsos, and legs, this helps prevent strain or discomfort, especially on longer rides
  • Child-specific components: From small brake levers that are easy for little hands to reach and activate, to cranks that cater for a greater leg-length range to be accommodated, every element is chosen to maximise safety and performance
  • Premium components: For our high-quality kids’ bikes, we don’t just choose any ordinary parts, we carefully select and design top-quality components from trusted manufacturers that are lightweight, durable, and built to withstand the demands of kids riding the bike - we won't compromise on quality using cheaper parts that have proven to break easily or even cause safety concerns!

A well-built, long-lasting Frog bike prevents the need for frequent repairs or replacements, unlike cheaper alternatives.

When it’s finally time to move up to a larger size, your child’s Frog bike doesn’t have to sit idle.

Here’s how you can ensure it continues to ‘hop’:

1. Pass it on

Do you have a younger sibling, friend, or cousin itching to hit the pedals? Frog bikes are designed to last, so passing it down within the family or your network is a fantastic way to keep the cycling joy rolling. This could save the c93kg of emissions that could have gone into making a new bike - the equivalent amount that would have been released in manufacturing a brand-new bike from non-recycled materials. Every ride becomes a step towards a greener planet!

"Mia learnt to balance and scoot along on her Frog Tadpole, after she moved onto a Frog pedal bike, her old Tadpole was passed down to her younger brother Oliver so he could master basic bike control. Our Tadpole started an amazing journey into cycling for both our kids"  -

Dan, Oliver and Mia’s dad.

2. Trade-in time

Many Frog stockists offer trade-in programmes. Give them a call and see if they can provide you with a fair price for a new Frog bike that's the perfect size for your growing cyclist.

3. Second-hand kids' bikes for sale

Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, eBay, or similar dedicated online communities are great options for finding a new home for your Frog bike. Take some clear photos, highlight the bike's condition and size, and watch the cycling enthusiasts come knocking!

Over 4,000 second-hand Frog bikes found new homes via eBay in the last 12 months!

4. Donate your bike

If your Frog bike is a little worse for wear but still in rideable condition, consider donating it to a local charity. Organisations like:

  • The Bike Project refurbishes donated bikes and provides them to refugees and asylum seekers, helping them access transportation in London and Birmingham.
  • Sue Ryder specialise in refurbishing donated bikes and giving them to those who need them most.
  • Cyclists Fighting Cancer uses funds from refurbished bike sales to provide children with cancer with bikes and trikes.
If the bike is beyond repair, it's worth checking with local charities as some may still accept it for spare parts. It's a fantastic way to spread the joy of cycling and promote a sustainable future.

5. How to recycle old bikes sustainably

According to the ‘Cyclist, data suggests there could be 38 million unused bikes in the UK. ’

If your Frog bike has reached the end of the road, don't despair. Many of the parts can be reused or recycled! Find your nearest dedicated bike recycling point using ‘Recycle Now's’ handy locator.

6. Explore sustainable options for a first-time bike purchase

If you're in the market for a new bike and want to make an eco-friendly choice, consider purchasing a factory outlet bike from Frog Bikes. These bikes, often including models with minor cosmetic imperfections or end-of-line designs, offer the same exceptional quality and performance while helping to reduce waste. You’ll save up to 40% off the full RRP (and benefit from FREE shipping), which means you’re getting cheaper high-quality kids’ bikes without the premium price tag. It's a great way to get a fantastic bike at a lower price, all while keeping sustainability in mind!

PLEASE NOTE: Factory outlet bikes are only available in the UK.

Sustainable cycling for a better future

At Frog Bikes, we’re passionate about sustainability. From our use of recycled materials in some models to designing bikes that stand the test of time, we aim to reduce waste and promote eco-friendly practices.

Frog Bikes uses 25% post-consumer recycled aluminium in its bike frames, which saves about 5.8 kg of CO2 per bike. The company is also working toward increasing the use of recycled materials, with plans to reach 100% recycled aluminium in the future, which could save up to 864 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to taking 375 cars off the road each.

By choosing Frog, you’re not just investing in a quality bike; you’re supporting a greener future.
