Tips for kids learning to ride a road bike
- 24 Aug 2021
Investing in a kids’ road bike isn’t just about buying a bicycle; it’s about nurturing independence, confidence, and a lifelong love of adventure. And with Frog’s range of lightweight, child-specific road bikes, your young rider is set up for success from the very first pedal stroke.
Why the right fit matters
Choosing the correct size road bike for your child is the first step toward a safe and enjoyable cycling experience. Frog’s kids’ road bikes are designed with:
- Lightweight aluminium frames for easy handling
- Narrow, short-drop handlebars for better control
- Auxiliary brake levers on top of the bars for added safety
These features help children ride longer distances, build speed, and grow in confidence, whether they’re training for a junior race or simply exploring the local lanes.
Setting up the perfect riding position
A well-fitted bike helps your child ride comfortably and efficiently. Here’s how to dial in the setup:
- Saddle height: Your child’s leg should have a slight bend when the pedal is at its lowest point
- Arm position: Elbows should be relaxed and slightly bent. A straight line from the elbow to the brake lever ensures proper reach and reduces strain
- Knee alignment: Encourage your child to keep their knees over the pedals for better power transfer and speed
Understanding the three main Road bike hand positions
Each position offers unique benefits depending on terrain and confidence level:
Tip: Teach your child to ease into the drops gradually - braking from this position offers more leverage, so smooth control is key.

Riding on the top of the handlebars
When your child is riding their road bike, adopting this position for hilly climbs allows your child to breathe easier, whilst having good access to the extra brake position on top of the handlebars.

Riding on the hoods
As your child becomes more confident on a kids' road bike, they will probably ride on the hoods the most, as it is the most relaxed position, and it’s also the easiest to shift gears.

Riding on the drops
When riding a road bike, this position is mostly used for downhill riding, as your child will have more control over the bike, as the gravity is lower, and they will be more aerodynamic. This position also offers a better balance than on the hoods. Braking whilst on the drops can be more powerful due to better leverage, so it’s best not to snatch the brakes whilst travelling at high speeds.

Real Rider Insight: Aria, Age 9
“I was nervous with my first road bike because the body position was so different. I started by holding the handlebars on top and keeping my body upright. I was wobbly at first, but once I got my confidence, it felt natural to hold the drops. I could ride faster, and it was easier!”
Aria’s story reflects what many young riders experience - initial uncertainty followed by a thrilling sense of mastery. Frog bikes are built to support that journey.
