Back-to-school biking tips

As the new school year approaches, many parents are seeking healthy and sustainable ways for their children to travel to school. Encouraging children to cycle to school is a wonderful way to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. With the right preparation and gear, your children can enjoy a safe and enjoyable ride to school every day.

Ensure the children are prepared for biking to school with our guide...

The benefits of cycling to school

  1. Physical health: Cycling is a great form of exercise that helps children develop strong muscles, improve cardiovascular health, and maintain a healthy weight.
  2. Environmental impact: By choosing to cycle to school instead of going by car, you're reducing your carbon footprint and helping to preserve the environment.
  3. Mental alertness: Exercising before school can enhance mental alertness, helping kids focus better in class and perform academically.

Safety gear checklist

Before sending your children off on their kids' bikes, it is always good practice to ensure that they are fully equipped with their safety gear:

  • A well-fitting helmet: It should sit level on your child's head around two finger widths above the eyebrows without obstructing vision.
  • Bright clothing: High-visibility clothing or a reflective vest makes your child more visible to motorists.
  • Lights and reflectors: These are essential for visibility, especially during dawn, dusk, or bad weather.
  • Water bottle and cage: To ensure your child doesn't get thirsty on their ride you can add a bottle cage and a Frog water bottle to their bike to ensure they stay hydrated.
  • A bell: Having a bell attached to your child’s bike is useful for alerting pedestrians and other cyclists.
  • Mudguards: Utilising the bikes’ mudguards will help to keep your child’s school uniform free from mud and water splashes.
  • A pannier rack: Fitting a pannier rack to your kid’s bikes is very useful in transporting school equipment on the commute.

Planning a safe route

Choosing a safe route to school is just as important as kids' bikes and cycling gear. Here are some tips for planning a safe route:

  • Bike-friendly roads: Look for roads with dedicated bike lanes and lower traffic levels. When possible, choose designated cycle routes to ensure a safer and more enjoyable ride for your child.
  • Get to know the route: Familiarise yourself and your child with the route by walking or biking it together before the school year begins. A trial run before the school year starts helps build your child's confidence and familiarity with the route. It also provides an opportunity to practice any tricky parts of the journey and to establish a realistic timeline for the commute.
  • Check for safe crossings: Make sure the route includes safe pedestrian crossings or bike-friendly intersections. Identify and practice using these crossings to ensure your child knows how to navigate them safely. This step is crucial for minimising risks and ensuring a smooth, safe ride to school.

The fun of cycling to school

“Since Arlo and Orla started riding their Frog bikes to school, our mornings have transformed from a rush to an adventure. These lightweight, easy-to-handle bikes have given them the confidence and excitement to look forward to their daily journey.

Arlo, who is 6, loves the sense of independence he gets from riding his Frog bike. The adjustable components ensure a perfect fit, making his rides smooth and comfortable. Every morning, he can’t wait to put on his helmet and pedal away, often challenging himself to ride a bit faster than the day before.

Orla, who is 4, also loves riding to school. Her Frog bike, with its spotty colours and ergonomic design, quickly became her favourite possession. She’s now the first to suggest riding to school, and her bike skills have improved remarkably.

As a parent, it’s heartwarming to see Arlo and Orla enjoying their rides, staying active, and developing a love for cycling. The reliability and quality of Frog bikes have made all the difference in ensuring they have a safe and enjoyable experience. Thank you, Frog Bikes, for making our school runs the highlight of our day!”
