The 12” Balance bike – Frog Tadpole

Best for: Children aged 2–3 years with an inside leg measurement of 31–41cm
Bike type: Balance bike (no pedals)
The Tadpole is our classic 12-inch balance bike. The ideal starting point for toddlers discovering the joy of two wheels. It helps children develop balance, steering control, and confidence before transitioning to a pedal bike.

Why choose the Tadpole?
- Lightweight aluminium frame for easy handling
- Hand brake to introduce safe stopping
- Adjustable seat and handlebars for growing riders
- Comfortable grips and fun colour options
- Helps children skip stabilisers entirely
Balance bikes like the Tadpole help kids skip stabilisers altogether, giving them a more natural and confident path to pedalling, making it the ideal first bike for toddlers. Check out our Are balance bikes better than stabilisers blog for more information.
The latest Tadpole model has also been updated with refined geometry, bringing it in line with our Tadpole Mini. It now features a sweeping frame design that offers improved stand‑over height, easier mounting and dismounting, and a more confidence‑inspiring riding position for young beginners.
Colour options: Electric blue, Red, Green and Pink
"We bought the Frog Tadpole balance bike for my boy and couldn't be happier with it. It's transformed his riding and confidence. He's happy riding on the pavement, in the park and at the BMX track. The back brake, steering over lock, weight and size are its best features." - Mr B
The 14” Balance bike – Frog Tadpole Plus

Best for: Children aged 3–4 years with an inside leg measurement of 36–47cm
Bike type: Larger balance bike (no pedals)
The Tadpole Plus is perfect for slightly older or taller children who aren’t ready for pedals yet. Whether they’re brand new to cycling or simply need more time to build confidence, this 14-inch balance bike gives them the space and stability they need.
Don’t rush pedals! Balance bikes often result in quicker, more confident pedalling without stabilisers.

Not sure which kids’ bike to choose?
Here's a helpful way to think about it:
- If your child is just learning to balance and steer and has an inside leg measurement of between 31-41cm, go for the Tadpole (12" balance bike)
- If they’re a bit taller, with an inside leg measurement of 36-47cm, but still need to work on balance, choose the Tadpole Plus (14" balance bike)
- If they’re confidently gliding and ready to pedal independently and have an inside leg measurement of 36-41cm, the Frog 38 (14" first pedal bike) is the ideal next step
Top tip: Always choose a bike based on inside leg measurement, not age. You can try our kids’ bike size guide or visit a Frog Bikes stockist to get fitted in person.
How to measure your child’s inside leg
- Stand your child, in their socks (no shoes), against a wall
- Place a small book between their legs (with the spine upwards), as high as is comfortable
- Ask the child to move away and measure from the spine of the book to the floor

FAQs: 12” vs 14” Kids’ Bikes
What age is a 12-inch bike suitable for?
A 12-inch bike is typically suitable for children aged 2–3 years, but the most accurate way to choose is by measuring your child’s inside leg. The Frog Tadpole 12” balance bike fits riders with an inside leg of 31–41cm.
Should my child start on a balance bike or a pedal bike?
Most children benefit from starting on a balance bike, as it teaches coordination and control without the distraction of pedals. Once they can glide confidently, they’re usually ready for a first pedal bike like the Frog 38.
Can a 14-inch pedal bike be used as a balance bike?
Yes. The Frog 38 can be temporarily used as a balance bike by removing the pedals, making it a flexible option for children transitioning from gliding to pedalling.
How do I know if my child is ready for a pedal bike?
Your child is ready for a pedal bike when they can:
- Glide confidently on a balance bike
- Steer with control
- Stop safely using a hand brake
If they meet these milestones, the Frog 38 is a great next step.
Is it better to choose a bike they can grow into?
No. A bike that’s too big can feel heavy, unstable, and difficult to control. Choosing the correct size helps your child ride safely and confidently, and often means they learn faster.
Do kids need stabilisers with Frog bikes?
Not at all. Frog balance bikes are designed to help children develop their skills naturally, without the need for stabilisers. Most little riders who begin on a balance bike move to pedals confidently without ever using them. If a child feels a bit wobbly on their first pedal bike, a balance buddy can offer gentle support while they build confidence and stability as they learn to ride.
