The Lifecycle of a Sustainable Bike

The Lifecycle of a Sustainable Bike: From Production to Recycling

As the world embraces eco-friendly solutions to combat climate change, choosing to cycle instead of driving is an enjoyable and sustainable alternative. But what makes a bike truly sustainable? It's not just about riding it; the bike’s entire lifecycle—from production to recycling—must align with environmental goals. Let’s explore how Frog Bikes is pedalling towards a greener future.

1. Material Selection: Building sustainability at the core

Frog Bikes constantly innovates to reduce material use while enhancing performance and durability. Key initiatives include:

  • Recycled Materials: Some of our frames and forks now use 25% post-consumer recycled aluminium, and our cranks are made from 75% post-consumer recycled aluminium, significantly lowering our carbon footprint.
  • Rice Husk Composite Pedals: Our FrogFit Technology® pedals use a rice husk composite, reducing plastic use by 50%.
  • Bioplastics and Novel Materials: We’re exploring the use of bioplastics for future designs to further minimise environmental impact.
  • We rigorously test new parts in our in-house testing facility to make sure they live up to our high-quality standards. By focusing on sustainable materials, we build bikes that are both eco-friendly and durable.

2. Production: Reducing environmental impact in the Frog factory and office

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of production:

  • Renewable Energy: Both our factory and office run on renewable electricity.
  • Waste Reduction: We’re on track to reduce the waste going to landfill, using innovative recycling methods like our cardboard crinkle machine to repurpose up to 70% of supplier cardboard packaging.
  • Sustainable Operations: With electric vehicle charging points, an electric pool car, and low-voltage lighting, we’re making every effort to reduce emissions in daily operations.

3. Transportation: Green logistics for Frog Bikes

Shipping bikes worldwide generates emissions, but we’re taking steps to minimise our impact:

  • Greener Packaging: Our packaging is virtually plastic-free, using boxes made from 82% recycled content that are 100% recyclable.
  • Alternative Shipping Methods: Wherever possible, we ship by sea instead of air, dramatically reducing emissions. We’re also part of coZEV, committing to zero-emission shipping by 2040.
  • Local Suppliers: We actively work with suppliers closer to home to reduce unnecessary miles, improve agility, and support the local economy.
  • Carbon Footprint: On average, each bike we produce emits 93kg CO2e—a benchmark we’re continuously working to lower.

4. Usage: The eco-friendly purpose of bikes

Bikes are inherently sustainable during their usage phase, as they produce no emissions and require minimal maintenance compared to motorised vehicles. At Frog Bikes, we maximise their positive impact by:

  • Encouraging Regular Maintenance: This extends the life of our bikes and ensures optimal performance.

FUN FACT: Cycling rather than driving to school twice a week for a year can offset the emissions of producing a Frog Bike.

5. Repair, maintenance, and recycling: Extending lifespan

Frog Bikes are built to last, designed with high-quality components that ensure longevity. We also prioritise repairability:

  • Standardised Parts: By using common sizes for spares, we make repairs easy and accessible.
  • Factory Outlet Bikes: Explore our factory bikes to extend their usability and reduce waste.
  • 10-Year Warranty: We offer a FREE extended warranty of 10 years on frames, handlebars, stems, seat posts, cranks, and forks (excluding the suspension forks on MTBs) if you complete and submit the Warranty Plus application form within 28 days of purchase. This extended warranty is non-transferable and also applies to factory outlet bikes.

By emphasising durability, repairability, and responsible disposal, we ensure each bike has a long, sustainable life.

Pedalling towards a greener future

A truly sustainable bike doesn’t just get you from point A to point B—it represents a commitment to environmental responsibility throughout its lifecycle. From eco-conscious design and production to responsible usage and repair, every step matters.

At Frog Bikes, we’re proud to lead the way. By choosing our sustainable bikes, riders can contribute to a healthier planet while enjoying the freedom and joy of cycling. So next time you hop on a bike, know that your choice is helping to pedal the world toward a brighter, cleaner future.

Fun Fact: Cycling just 10km twice a week instead of driving can save an average of 150kg of CO₂ per year. That’s the same as the emissions from A one-way flight from London to Paris. Imagine the impact if we all made this small change!
