Discover the joy of riding with Mini Bikers

At Frog Bikes, we believe in fostering a love for cycling from an early age, and that’s why we love having partners like Mini Bikers! This amazing program is dedicated to introducing young riders to the world of cycling in a fun and engaging way.

We had the opportunity to meet with the Mini Bikers team to learn more about their mission and the incredible impact they’re making in the community.

1. What is Mini Bikers?

The inspiration behind Mini Bikers came from our experiences working with children in schools. We noticed that many kids were missing out on essential cycle training simply because they hadn’t yet learned to ride a bike. Combining this insight with our passion for cycling, we set up Mini Bikers with a mission: to introduce children to the joy of riding through interactive sessions that build confidence and essential cycling skills.

2. What can parents expect from a typical Mini Bikers session?

Parents can expect a structured yet fun environment in Mini Bikers children's cycling programs. Our programs are designed to be inclusive, focusing on creating a supportive atmosphere where every child feels secure, from balance bike training to teaching kids to cycle. Each session is tailored to meet the needs of the children while encouraging them to learn from and support each other. Our instructors are highly experienced in working with children, including those with special educational needs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive in learning to ride a bike.

“Absolutely brilliant! My daughter is 8 years old and was quite nervous. The team was so lovely, and how they approached each child was tailored to suit their needs. By the end of the balance bike course she had grown in confidence so much and I was astounded by how quickly she picked it up during the pedal bike course. Can't recommend them enough!”

3. What age is best for children to start learning how to ride?

We recommend kids start learning to ride a bike as early as 18 months in our Mini Bikers sessions. The earlier children are introduced to bikes, the more naturally they incorporate cycling into their daily lives. However, it’s important to note that it’s never too late to learn! We provide bike lessons for kids up to the age of 10 who are eager to embrace cycling.

4. How can parents help their children learn to ride a bike?

Learning to ride a bike and teaching kids to cycle can sometimes lead to frustration for parents and children alike. Here are two key points of how to teach a child to ride a bike without stabilisers:

  • Balance first: At Mini Bikers, we emphasise developing balance skills before progressing to pedals. Balance bike training helps children gain confidence before tackling more complex skills, like pedalling
  • Group learning: Bike lessons for kids in a peer-led environment allow children to learn from one another while reducing stress for both kids and parents. It’s often easier for children to pick up cycling skills alongside their peers

“Very pleased with the confidence my daughter built on her bike, within the first session she was riding without stabilisers. It's great for children to learn to ride and see other children enjoy themselves while learning first skills on a bike. The patience of the instructor was great, he gave each child time according to their ability. Highly recommend!

5. What types of bikes are best for young riders?

Choosing the right bike is key! One of the most important aspects to consider is the weight of the bike. A lightweight bike allows children to handle it more easily, which is vital when they are learning to ride a bike and mastering balancing and steering. That’s why we partner with Frog Bikes, renowned for its lightweight designs that make learning to ride a bike much easier.

Choosing the right size bike is essential for safety and comfort. A bike that is too big can be dangerous, as children may struggle to reach the ground or control the bike properly. Conversely, a bike that is too small can hinder their growth and development in cycling skills. Parents should look for bikes that allow the child to sit comfortably on the seat with their feet flat on the ground, enabling them to start and stop with confidence. Frog Bikes offers a range of sizes tailored to different age groups and heights, ensuring a perfect fit for every child.

6. How do you make biking a fun experience for kids?

To ensure biking is a positive experience for children, here is how to encourage your child to ride a bike regularly:

  • Start early: Integrate biking into everyday activities. Use bikes for family outings to parks, playgroups, or local shops
  • Explore together: Children love to discover new environments. Plan biking adventures that include a picnic or a fun destination, making the experience both active and enjoyable! Engaging kids in outdoor cycling activities helps instil lifelong healthy habits

7. How can parents ensure their child's safety while biking?

Safety is paramount when introducing kids to biking. Here are some biking safety tips for parents:

  • Get comfortable with helmets: Start by getting your child used to wearing a helmet from the very beginning. This will help make it a natural part of their riding experience
  • Regular bike checks: Keep an eye on important aspects of the bike, such as tyre pressure, brakes, chain, and wheel spokes. Regular maintenance ensures that everything is in safe working order.
