Coopers Lane’s Bike Bus is leading the way!

As Bikeability’s Cycle to School Week kicks off (23-27 September), there’s no better time to grab your bike helmet, dust off your kids’ bikes, and join the fun! At Coopers Lane Primary School, the excitement is palpable as they begin their third year of cycling safely to school with their brilliant Bike Bus.

This initiative is the perfect way to celebrate Cycle to School Week, promoting an active lifestyle, building friendships, and creating a safer, more sustainable way to travel to school.

Each Friday during term time, the Coopers Lane Primary School Bike Bus gathers children from traffic-free spots in the community, making it easy and safe for them to ride to school together. The kids meet bright and early to share a breakfast snack and a play session before starting their journey, creating opportunities for friendships to blossom across year groups. It’s not just the students who benefit – parents and carers are building bonds too, fostering a real sense of community.

One of Coopers Lane Bike Bus founders, Jacks Lampon commented "It’s amazing to watch friendships form between students from different year groups who might not usually have the chance to connect."

Ride safely

Thanks to Coopers Lane’s “school street,” a car-free road that leads to the school gates, the children can cycle in safety and style on their kids’ bikes. There’s nothing quite like the sound of bike bells ringing in unison as they proudly pedal their way to school through this traffic-free zone.

Jacks Lampon commented “While the local area only has two cycle lanes – both barely 10 feet long – the Bike Bus makes it possible for children to travel safely as part of a group. Not only does this ensure their well-being, but it also strengthens the connections between families in the area. The Bike Bus is a fantastic way to make cycling accessible for all!”

Bike bus fun with Frog Bikes!

The Coopers Lane Bike Bus wouldn’t be complete without some extra excitement. On the final Friday of last term, Coopers Lane’s Bike Bus broke its own record, with 86 children (and one enthusiastic dog) joining the ride! Frog Bikes added to the fun by providing goody bags, and children received certificates from the Frog Bikes website, which they proudly clutched as they left school.

Jacks Lampon said, “Seeing their confidence grow with each ride has been heartwarming. The Bike Bus has given these children the chance to make lifelong memories while encouraging them to lead active, healthy lives as they grow older.”
