How to choose the right bike for your child’s next adventure
- May 1, 2025
As kids grow, so do their ambitions for outdoor fun and exploration. Whether they’re embarking on their first pedal-powered adventure or gearing up for longer rides, choosing the best bike for kids is key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
At Frog Bikes, we specialise in lightweight, child-specific bikes designed to enhance confidence and skill development. In this kids’ bike buying guide, we’ll walk you through how to select the perfect kids’ bike size and model for your young rider, answering common questions like "What size bike does my child need?" and "How do I measure my child for a bike?"
1. Why bike fit matters
A properly fitted kids’ bike makes all the difference in your child’s comfort, confidence, and ability to control the bike safely.
How do I know if my child’s bike is too big or too small?
A bike that is too large can be difficult to handle, while a bike that is too small may be uncomfortable and hinder riding skills.
At Frog Bikes, we use inside leg measurement to determine the right size kids’ bike rather than just age or height. This method ensures that children can reach the ground with ease and ride comfortably.

How do I measure my child for a bike?
- Have your child stand in socks with their back against a wall
- Place a small book or similar object between their legs, as high as is comfortable
- Ask the child to move away from the wall and then measure the distance from the top of the book to the floor
- Use the inseam measurement to find the ideal bike size from the chart above
- Then, choose the right bike type for their adventure

3. Choosing the right bike type for their adventure
Different adventures call for different kids’ bikes. Here’s how to match the model to your child’s riding style:

First-timers (Balance bikes & first pedal bikes)
If your child is just starting, consider a Frog balance bike. Are balance bikes better than training wheels (stabilisers)? Balance bikes help kids develop coordination and steering skills before transitioning to a first pedal bike, whereas stabilisers can hinder balance progress. For little riders ready for pedals, the Frog 38 (which has recently replaced the Frog 40), Frog 44 or Frog 47 are ideal first-pedal bikes with lightweight frames and easy-to-reach brakes. The pedals can also be removed to act as a balance bike.
Everyday explorers (Hybrid bikes)
If your child enjoys a mix of school commutes, park rides, and weekend trails, a Frog hybrid bike is a great all-rounder. These bikes are lightweight, easy to manoeuvre, and come with all-terrain tyres for a smooth ride.
Urban adventurers (City bikes)
If your child primarily rides in the city, a Frog City bike provides a comfortable step-through frame and upright position, perfect for urban commutes and leisure rides.
Junior road and gravel cyclists & racers (Road & track bikes)
If your child is passionate about road or gravel cycling, triathlons, or cyclocross, the Frog road bikes and Frog track bikes provide lightweight frames, narrow tyres, and drop handlebars to improve speed and efficiency.
