What else should I consider?

Standover height and saddle height should also be factored into finding the right size bike for your child. This will ensure that your child can stand comfortably over the top tube (cross bar) of the bike and be able to touch the ground when seated on the bike allowing them to stop and start without toppling off.

How to fit a kids’ bike helmet

If your child has a love of cycling, a bike helmet should be a standard piece of equipment for their two-wheeled adventures.

The helmet plays an important role in protecting their head if they happen to fall off the bike. Whether they are toddlers or teenagers, new to cycling, or cycling experts, a helmet should be their number one kit item on EVERY bike ride!

How to teach kids about bike brakes with Bikeability

Teaching a child to ride a bicycle not only provides them with a lifelong skill but also inspires confidence and independence while having a whole lot of fun! One of the most valuable and essential cycling lessons you can teach a child is speed control. As exhilarating as it is to roll down hills and race friends to the park, teaching a child how to use their brakes properly will enable them to slow down and come to a controlled stop when needed.

How to explain bike gears to a child

With your child now a master of bike handling and balance, the next step forward is to teach them about bike gears. Having this knowledge will help them to maintain a comfortable speed whilst pedalling, depending on the terrain and gradient.

Having bike gears is not an indication of how fast the bike will go, but about the efficiency of the bike in different situations. Switching gears can make light work of hills, rough terrain and even descents, and knowing when to switch up or down a gear will make cycling for your child much easier.

At Frog, we take sizing a child very seriously. This is one of the most important factors for cycling success and enjoyment. While other brands focus on the age of your child, their height or even bike wheel sizes, at Frog we know that finding the perfect size kids’ bike for your child is all about your child's inseam plus their confidence in riding.

Kids grow at completely different rates, meaning age or height is not a reliable way to determine the right size kids’ bike. Our children’s bikes are sized based on inseam rather than age, which is the most reliable way to find the right size bike for each child.

How to find the right size bike for your child

How are kids' bikes measured?

To ensure your child rides safely and comfortably, it's essential to check that they can reach the ground with their feet while seated on the bike. The best way to do this is by measuring your child's inseam. This will help you choose the correct bike size, improving safety, control, and comfort while cycling.

How to measure your child’s inseam for the perfect bike fit

  1. Have your child stand in socks with their back against a wall.
  2. Place a small book or similar object between their legs, as high as is comfortable.
  3. Ask the child to move away from the wall, then measure the distance from the top of the book to the floor.
  4. Use the inseam measurement to find the ideal bike size from the chart below.

How to choose the right kids’ bikes

For kids just learning to ride, a lightweight 10” balance bike, 12” balance bike or 14” balance bike is typically ideal, as this will help them learn the art of balance and coordination before moving on to a first pedal bike. However, if your child is learning to ride at an older age, their wheel size needs will adjust accordingly.

When starting to pedal, choose a lightweight 14” first pedal bike, 16” first pedal bike or 18” first pedal bike ensuring it matches the child's inside leg measurements.

When children grow taller and require bikes with 26” wheels, they often face the challenge of transitioning to adult-sized bikes. Unfortunately, adult bikes are significantly heavier and harder for kids to control. Frog Bikes solves this problem by offering a wide range of lightweight, high-quality 26” wheel bikes specifically designed for kids. These include children’s hybrid bikes, road bikes, track bikes, mountain bikes, and city bikes, ensuring taller children can continue riding comfortably without being pushed into adult-sized bikes before they’re ready.

Find the perfect bike for your child with Frog bikes - designed to make every ride safe, smooth, and enjoyable!

Frog bikes offer features that are specifically designed for children which makes them some of the best children’s bikes on the market, including:

  • Lightweight frames: High-quality aluminium, some with 25% recycled material, ensures the bikes are both lightweight and durable.
  • Custom geometry: Frame design tailored to a child’s anatomy for comfortable, efficient riding.

  • Premium components: Lightweight, durable, high-quality parts from trusted manufacturers.

A well-built, long-lasting Frog bike prevents the need for frequent repairs or replacements, unlike cheaper alternatives.

Other important considerations for kids' bike fit

When choosing the perfect bike for your child, inseam length is just one factor. Standover height and saddle height are also crucial for ensuring your child can comfortably stand over the bike and touch the ground while seated. These measurements improve control and confidence, especially when starting, stopping, and navigating uneven terrain. Proper fit ensures a safer, more enjoyable riding experience.
