Cycle to School Week 3-7 October 2022

Bikeability, are excited for Cycle to School Week for 2022, the event previously known as Bike to School Week, encourages school kids and their parents to swap their car for their cycles as a way of getting to school.

It’s a great way to keep fit, save money and protect the environment, as well as having lots of fun on the journey to school.

Cycle to School Week will run from Monday 3 to Friday 7 October across the UK. During this time, we want to encourage as many people as possible to make a pledge for Cycle to School Week. Participants can choose between pledging to swap one car journey for cycling, cycle to school every day, cycle with their family, or discover somewhere new on a cycle ride.

You can make your pledge on the Bikeability website and all participants will be entered into a prize draw to win a brand-new Frog City 61.

Bikeability asked some of their own team why Cycle to School Week is important, and how they will be celebrating it.

“Cycle to school week is important because the school run is currently a huge generator of car traffic, which is unsustainable, dangerous, and has a negative impact on everyone at the school gate as well as local communities around schools. Cycling could be an alternative for some families if more people did it, and it became normal. We’ve pledged to find somewhere new on bikes as a family, as we already have no car and do all school runs by sustainable transport!”
Ruth Cumming, Instructor

“We love Cycle to School Week as it encourages children to put into practice what they have learned during Bikeability training and to build their confidence. We look forward to seeing full bike racks at our local schools during that week.”
Mark Sheffield, Bikeability Scheme Manager, Chorley School Sports Partnership CIC

“Why wouldn't you give it a try? Cycling to school is such a great thing to do as a family - it's fun, cheap, and great exercise. It's also so much better for the environment than clogging up the roads with yet another vehicle on a short-distance school run! I understand that some parents might initially be nervous but that is where Bikeability is here to help!”
Mike Holwill, Instructor and Innovation Officer

“The more people who see children cycling safely to school, the sooner people will question the ‘school run’ by motor. Safe cycling!”
John Holiday, Instructor

“Cycle to School Week is important, it’s quicker than walking and more fun than the car, and a great way to bring that fun and enjoyment into everyday life. This year, I will be celebrating it by cycling to school with my two, as well as committing to find a new place in our local area to visit on a cycle ride.”
Benjamin Smith, Instructor, and Director of Development

“I love to cycle with my family, cycling regularly with my seven-year-old. The main man himself has made not one, but two pledges for Cycle to School Week. That being cycle to school every day (come rain and shine!) and discover a new and exciting place to explore.

“Cycle to School Week encourages families and friends to start and end the day together, switching the mind, body, and soul on, increasing independence whilst being kind to the environment and being a part of something bigger!”
Megan Giglia, Instructor and Development Officer
