Frog is growing Greener…

Switching to eco-friendly products

Welcome to the new ‘greener’ Frog Blog. In an effort to spread awareness and to instil the same sustainability principles that we, at Frog Bikes, live and breathe, we wanted to share with you how the team is making a difference to the environment by swapping everyday items to more eco-friendly products.

Meet Shelley, Co-founder and Director at Frog Bikes. She leads by example with sustainable choices at Frog by looking for small ways to make a big difference in everyday lives. Shelley has recommended several environmentally-friendly options that she has already switched to.

When planet-friendly products first hit our shelves a few years back, some of them felt like a compromise: I remember struggling with washing up liquid which didn’t really make any bubbles or light bulbs which took ages to glow brightly. But there are some fantastic items on the market now which are at least as good as traditional brands, and some are cheaper because they are reusable time and time again. Often they’re made or sold by local independent companies too.

Compostable Coffee Pods

Blue Goose Eco Compostable coffee pods for the coffee machine, which only heats the amount of water you need (better than a kettle), and only uses a small amount of coffee to make an intense flavour (less coffee than a cafetiere). Then the pods go in the food waste for composting and they're delivered by the milkman! www.bluegoose.coffee

Refillable Glass Bottles

Shelley also purchases larger refill bottles of hand wash and shower gel, to top up smaller individual bottles.

EcoEgg

Shelley stopped using laundry detergent and switched to Laundry Egg, which not only has proven to be much cheaper, but it means no large plastic bottles, and no chemicals going down the drain either! www.ecoegg.com

Biodegradeable Bin Bags

These bin liners are made from corn starch so are 100% biodegradable and compostable, meaning that when they are disposed of they will soon disappear leaving behind no fragments or trace of their existence. www.binlinersdirect.com

We have received many great suggestions from members of the Frog team, raving about other eco-friendly produce available:

Refillable Shaving Foam

Plastic-free shaving foam in refillable aluminium tins that are designed for a lifetime, not single-use and are Vegan and Vegetarian friendly. As aluminium can be endlessly recycled it is a much better material to use for packaging. www.kingofshaves.com

Recycled Toilet Paper

Who gives a crap loo roll offer forest-friendly toilet paper, 100% bamboo paper and 100% recycled toilet rolls, but what’s even better is that they donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world! www.uk.whogivesacrap.org

Vegan Produce

This online supermarket offers an excellent range of over 5,000 vegan and cruelty-free products. www.thevegankindsupermarket.com

Biodegradable Wipes

Using wipes made of natural fibres and that are completely free from plastic means they will decompose in a matter of weeks.

No More Clingfilm

As plastic wrap pollutes the planet, is only single-use and can take around 2 years to decompose, the use of silicon stretchy reusable lids make a fantastic alternative to clingfilm. Or even beeswax cloth can be used to wrap food. They self-seal, are plastic-free and are suitable for use in the fridge or freezer. www.beeswaxwraps.co.uk

Recyclable Toothbrush Heads

These electric toothbrush heads are vegan-friendly and made from sustainable materials in a bid to help tackle plastic pollution. They can be returned after use in a pre-paid compostable pouch. www.brushd.co.uk

No Plastic Packaging

The products at Ethique have no plastic packaging at all, are sea-freighted to reduce carbon footprint and a tree is planted with every order! They have so much to offer, including shampoo, conditioner, face cream and scrubs, all in solid bars. www.ethique.co.uk

Sustainable Toothcare Products

Georganics offer tooth care products that are sustainable, including mouthwash tablets, toothpaste in a jar, bamboo toothbrushes, charcoal floss - and all without plastic packaging!! www.georganics.com

Natural Cleaning Products

Tincture has created high performance, non-toxic cleaning products that are completely safe to use around the entire family. With no harsh chemicals. All cleaners are 100% natural, made with essential oils, botanical extracts and plant-based actives. www.tincturelondon.com

So, all in all, eco-friendly products are a great replacement to plastics to help rid wasteful, single-use items and they are more durable, reusable, less toxic, less resource-intensive, and safer for the environment.

By making a positive change and opting for environmentally friendly alternatives we are all contributing to protecting the planet and the future of our children - We want to make a green impact!
